Risks of Vicks Vapo Rub for Babies and Children and a Natural Alternative

If you are still grabbing that little blue jar of Vicks and slathering it all over your babies and children you might want to think twice. The ingredients in Vicks carries huge risks. Classmates were dropping like flies this year in my children’s classes {except} for my kids, thanks to several natural remedies we use at home.

Food for thought…anything you put on your children’s skin should be unequivocally safe to eat. AND you should never have to take something for a cough, flu, fever or ear infection that destroys their precious liver or blood. There is NO trade-off needed.

Vicks {Vapo} Rub is under fire in recent years because of the shear toxic harm it carries with its synthetic ingredients. Toxins that “can be irritants, causing the body to produce more mucus to protect the airway,” according to a doctor who has been doing studies on the product. Vicks has been under fire in numerous articles and studies for contributing to respiratory distress.

Vicks Can Cause:

  • Impaired breathing
  • Local side effects
  • Camphor overdose

Active Ingredients: Camphor, Eucalyptol, Menthol

What is a Side Effect?

Many medications can cause side effects. A side effect is an unwanted response to a medication when it is taken in normal doses. Side effects can be mild or severe, temporary or permanent. The side effects listed below are not experienced by everyone who takes this medication. If you are concerned about side effects, discuss the risks and benefits of this medication with your doctor.

**Contact your doctor if you experience these side effects and they are severe or bothersome. Your pharmacist may be able to advise you on managing side effects.

confusion
constipation
dizziness
drowsiness
nausea
vomiting

Stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical attention if any of the following occur:

signs of an allergic reaction (hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, tongue, or throat)

Inactive Ingredients: Cedarleaf oil, Nutmeg oil, special Petrolatum, Thymol and
Turpentine oil (let’s not event get into the fact that the “essential oils” listed here are synthetic and not even natural)

Spotlight on Camphor and Turpentine:

Camphor in larger quantities is poisonous when ingested and can cause seizures, confusion, irritability, and neuromuscular hyperactivity. In 1980, the FDA set a limit of 11% allowable camphor in consumer products and totally banned products labeled as camphorated oil, camphor oil, camphor liniment, and camphorated liniment (note that “white camphor essential oil” contains no significant amount of camphor). Since alternative treatments exist, medicinal use of camphor is discouraged by the FDA, except for skin-related uses, such as medicated powders, which contain only small amounts of camphor.

Turpentine oil is an organic solvent, and thus poses many of the same hazards as do other such substances. Being “natural” does not make it less harmful than artificial solvents. Its vapor can burn the skin and eyes, damage the lungs and respiratory system, as well as the central nervous system when inhaled, and cause renal failure when ingested, among other things. It is highly flammable.

I have used this {special} homemade salve for a few years and it always receives an incredible response. Easily adjust the oil to what you want. Just be sure to use the most pure and potent oils you can. Please contact me if you would like to know what I use and receive my mentorship.

Basic Respiratory Recipe

1/2 cup of cold pressed organic olive oil
1/4 cup organic kokoum butter
2 level tablespoons of beeswax (you can use pastilles or grated) use are or less to make the consistency you like when hardened
Add 15-30 drops of Essential Oils (see below for combinations)
In a double boiler-melt the beeswax, kokoum butter and olive oil. Remove from heat and allow it to cool slightly, test on a spoon to see if you need more beesewax. Once its cooled slightly but still completely liquid, add essential oils with a whisk and stir in clockwise. *If the mixture is too hot it will harm the healing compounds of the oils.* Pour into glass or metal containers-do NOT use plastic as therapeutic oils can degrade plastics, unless you use high quality and a #1.

What different Essential Oils can target:

Single Oils

  • Ravensara ~brochial opening, anti-inflammatory and anti-viral
  • Roman Chamomile ~ wonderful nerve-calming qualities, anti-infectious, antiseptic and supportive of the nervous system
  • Marjoram ~ think “muscles” for marjoram. Relaxant, antibacterial, antimicrobial, expectorant, and antispasmodic.
  • Eucalyptus Blue ~ Slightly different smell than other variations of eucalyptus, decongestant, expectorant, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory.
  • Peppermint ~ this is your fever fighter! A spicy oil, so be sure to dilute with a carrier oil as needed and nursing mommas should be careful as this could possibly lower breast milk production. Peppermint is beautifully filled with antibacterial properties and a great decogenstant.
  • Thyme and Myrtle ~ this is a combo I use together. They are like peanut butter & jelly! Work amazingly well to clear a bark like cough. Dilute heavily as the thyme is rather spicy. Very antiviral, antispasmodic, decongestant and expectorant.
  • Hyssop ~ a rare ancient biblical oil that is very supportive of coughs and pneumonia-type challenges. Expectorant, decogenstant, anti-viral, anti-infectious and there was a reason one of my favorite verses in the Bible is “Cleanse me with Hyssop and I will be whiter than snow.” WE use this daily to support a healthy respiratory tract.
  • Lemon ~ a tonic like oil that offers high anti-viral and cleansing properties. Amazing to flush out the lymph nodes and supportive of allergy-type respiratory problems.
