Essential Oils instead of Inhalers and Breathing treatments
Our home will never be without many of the respiratory support essential oils and for good reason! We have been able to really shift our thinking on pharmaceutical choices and understand the dangerous side-effects that come with these man made synthetics.
It is important to note that every system in our bodies work in harmony with one another. Think of it as a teetering scale if you will; one goes out of balance and the others can often follow suit. Our respiratory system is vitally important to maintain proper lung function and breath. In fact, it is not uncommon to see nearly 1 out of 2 children with some type of persistent cough, asthma, allergy or chronic croup. What in the world is going on? I have my own theories of course, and even if you disagree with me, it’s nearly impossible to ignore the astronomical amount of children that are SICK!
Western medicines answer is to chug down the allegra or zyrtec and puff on 10 different inhalers. We were in that same boat, until I finally stood up and said “NO” to our doctors. Enough with the band-aids and quick fixes, I wanted real answers, I wanted to find the root cause and I wanted to HEAL my babies.
I often ask myself this question over and over..”why is it SO hard to offer a natural option first to parents?” Especially when 9/10 times it will rectify the issue at the root cause and that precious child will be able to avoid a toxic liver and exposure to heavy metals. Would doctors and big pharma really lose that much money if they actually started curing their patients? Hmmm…..you can answer that.
Ancient Oils & Myrrh
Ancient Biblical oils have a rich history for targeting all types of lung distress and are largely anti-bacterial, anti-viral and calm the nervous system.
Some of our favorites are:
Cassia (cinnamon) – Anti-inflammatory properties, anti-bacterial and very beneficial for lung support. Hot and spicy oil, so dilute if needed with a fatty “carrier” oil like jojoba, olive, grapeseed or almond.
Calamus – Physically Calamus Root Essential Oil stimulates the circulation and used for rheumatism and arthritis. It calms nervous spasmodic conditions. As a stimulant, Calamus Root Oil is especially effective with the nervous system and the brain. Calamus is in the Holy Anointing oil of the Bible.
Hyssop – coughing, sore throats, digestive support, anti-bacterial, anti-viral. Hyssop has a lovely sweet aroma that has stopped croup in its tracks for us.
Frankincense - beneficial to the immune system. Anti-everything! We use this daily to boost our immunity as well as brain health. When we feel sickness knocking at the door, then I up our use of frankincense and also take internally.
One only has to know and appreciate the power of GOD to understand why his medicine prevails over man’s. We use these oils often either on the chest, in a diffuser, inhaled deeply or even in a nebulizer when needed. As always quality is key, do not use inferior oils and expect safe results. To know what we use and trust as a family feel free to contact me HERE.
We also know that myrrh was given to Baby Jesus along with frankincense and gold. So, myrrh and frankincense were considered luxury items used by the wealthy and highly regarded next to gold.
The benefits of myrrh include skin care. Since the Egyptians it has been used to maintain healthy skin, anti-aging and help sooth chapped or cracked skin. Few people realize the role myrrh can play in supporting normal healthy lungs.
**Much of the myrrh, like frankincense, melaleuca and eucalyptus species is being adulterated (changed) or synthetically made. And most companies are selling it under the generic name myrrh. So always purchase essential oil form a reputable source and by genus species, as well as, common name.
The POWER DUO of Thyme and Myrtle
I kind of stumbled upon making this blend one night and let me tell you, it’s amazing! So much that I must share about them with you~
Thyme (thymus vulgarism) has a spicy, warm, herbaceous aroma that is both powerful and penetrating. Known since ancient times as a “tincture” herb, thyme contains large amounts of thymol. Thyme supports the immune, respiratory, digestive, nervous, and other body systems. There are some significant finding on the antibiotic capabilities of essential oils and thyme in particular HERE.
Dr. Penoel, a world known researcher of the uses of therapeutic essential oils, studied myrtle for balancing glandular system and thyroid.
Myrtle’s chemistry is very close to frankincense essential oil.
We use this a lot at night for restful, peaceful slumber. The kids love it. I do not typically need to dilute too much, as we have been doing this awhile. However, as always, I would start with diluting in a 2:1 ratio of carrier oil to essential oil. Wonderful places to rub this mixture are the chest, feet and you could take internally but only if you are using a pure essential oil. Again, be careful most on the market are chemically laden.
Whenever I think of the lungs the first oil that pops into mind is this one. Ravintsara is a therapeutic grade essential oil that is very soothing and will provide comfort when applied topically to the chest and throat or when diffused. (this is not to be confused with revensara aromatica)
Ravintsara is distilled from the leaves of Cinnamomum camphora in Madagascar. This is a very different species than the camphor trees grown in Asia. Rather than being high in camphor, it is high in 1,8-cineole eucalyptol, the plant chemical that give the various eucalyptus oils their penetrating aroma. True Ravintsara essential oils contain at least 45% 1,8-cineole, rather than the approximately 5% found in true Ravensara aromatica oil.
The two oils are clearly very different aromatically, and in chemical composition.
For respiratory or bronchial problems, it seems to be common knowledge among those that practice the use of essential oils, that RavINTsara, with its high component of 1,8-cineole would ease breathing.
As with any essential oils use caution when using on children but extra care is necessary for small children due to wintergreen and peppermint essential oils.
Can you use Essential Oils in a Nebulizer or CPAP?
This is an item of great controversy, and one that I often get the blank minion stare back when I explain we use our oils in a nebulizer if the situation calls for it. Now, luckily over the course of the last 2 years with heavy use of essential oils and being very proactive, we haven’t needed to reach for it. BUT in those few times where my mommy instinct kicked in I took out the ancient nebulizer and added some of my favorite lung support oils with great success. Like IMMEDIATE success.
It is a personal choice, and one that I can assure you no Doctor will promote, and IF you do choose to use oils, take great care to clean the tubes and holding container well, as oils do leave a residue and can damage the inner compartment. BUT they work amazingly well to get deep into the lungs. For our family, a steroid or other pharmaceutical will always be the last option and wold take an act of God for us even to consider using a synthetic.
Oils I typically use are 1-2 drops of frankincense, hyssop and myrtle with distilled water. **again this is a personal choice, and you do need to take care of the machinery.
We absolutely love that there is a safe option to help support us. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. I want parents to know that options exist that will absolutely change your viewpoint on healthcare. Modern medicine as it stands, is “sick care” NOT focused on creating permanent life-long healthy families. If that were the case, then billions of dollars in pharmaceuticals would not exist. Of course we need trauma management, but it’s the 99% in-between that matters! Stand up and research, take action and do not be afraid to ask your doctor why they are not offering something natural like an essential oil first. In most cases the oil will win out over the drug every single time. Empower yourself and you will reap the safe benefits of natural medicine.

** I have to say the because people do not think. I totally ingest my oils, but I do so with only a certain brand. With that said…Do not take any oils internally and do not apply undiluted essential oils, absolutes, CO2s or other concentrated essences onto the skin without advanced essential oil knowledge or consultation from a qualified aromatherapy practitioner, and be sure you are using pure essential oils. If you are pregnant, epileptic, have liver damage, have cancer, or have any other medical problem, use oils only under the proper guidance of a qualified aromatherapy practitioner. Use extreme caution when using oils with children and give children only the gentlest oils at extremely low doses. It is safest to consult a qualified aromatherapy practitioner before using oils with children. A skin patch test should be conducted prior to using an oil that you’ve never used before.
