Alarming rates of Estrogen Dominance

What in the world is going on with all these hormone issues!? An epidemic number of women, over 90% in some form have estrogen and progesterone disruption. Of course we can easily point toward the excessive amount of toxins, vaccines (heavy metals and other adjuvants), poor nutritional quality of food and an over-abundance of soy derived products. The change in society within the last 30 or so years is startling. Now is the time to take control of your health and your children. The current rate of {new} synthetics hitting the market daily is mind blowing! Instead of western medicine looking to balance our precious bodies, we stuff it full of more chemicals, because that is the answer right? It is if the your bottom line depends on it.

Endometriosis, PCOS, PMS, cystic acne, fibroids, hysterectomies happening at earlier than expected ages, hormone replacement therapies, and of course breast cancer; all happening in scary proportions. The sheer amount of women, and my own close friends, who have difficulty getting pregnant is alarming. We have to question AND we have to take control of our own health decisions.

The root of this all is hormone disruption. The quick-fix approach is not the answer and only compounds the problem, as it does across the board in western medicine.

Many Doctors are just not trained in the art of weaving holistic practices with allopathic, therefor missing the root of estrogen dominance completely. Quite simply too much estrogen and not enough progesterone. Recent statistics can point to over 50% of women age 35 and over affected by this problem, even young girls around the age of 8 are starting to show signs. Now that is scary! I refuse to let my own daughter be victim to the secretly pumped estrogen into this current generation.

What History has to Show

In the last 50 years (conservative estimate) we have shifted from a society that views children and pregnancy as a gift and blessing, to controlling every aspect of conception with a pill or elective surgery. There really is a fine line to walk in this area. While I can understand “choosing” wisely about having children; when we cross that line with the over use of prescriptions {stepping away from abstinence} and incorporate more of a selfish view of work and success over family, we can begin to enter dangerous territory very easily.

Little Girls menstruate WAY to early

Girls menstruate at WAY to early of an age; 10 and 11 sometimes. Documentation exists from the last century or so to establish that the average age of first menstruation in american girls has declined by several years, from an average of 17 to 13 years of age, now towards the 11-12 age.

And then there is the pill, a synthetic form of hormone that create a “pregnancy” state, tricking the body and disrupting what is intended to happen naturally every month. When periods get painful or heavy, this is the western answer, and parents fall for it everyday placing their young girls at risk for major health problems.

Make no mistake: Birth control is a drug.

A toxic substance that your 12 year old girl will deal with the rest of her life in terms of possible reprocussions to her liver, skin, ovaries and the ability to become pregnant without difficulty.

The amount of periods is also of concern. This generation has about 400 in a lifecycle, versus about 150 which also points to estrogen dominance. 100 years ago lactation and levels of progesterone excreted by the body were much healthier because with each pregnancy the body creates a balance of hormones. We simply have to shift away from synthetically altering the state of our periods and let it happen naturally. When it becomes painful or irregular there are wonderful natural remedies that work without side effects and better than any pharmaceutical. I am obsessed with certain essential oils for this and it works! I do only trust one brand of oil that I am confident is safe.

These conditions are on the rise significantly:

  • infertility
  • Cancer
  • PCOS
  • PMS
  • fibroids
  • painful periods/early periods/irregular
  • migraines
  • endometriosis
  • cysts
  • anemia

So let us just have some common sense. These did not occur frequently in history, they are modern day obstacles. Then add all the chemicals, vaccines (Guardasil people, it has numerous dangerous side effects), GMO’s, poor nutrition, excess alcohol and birth control and you can see it is a recipe for disaster and we must stand up together and demand a shift in perspective.

Chemical cocktails and the new “normal”

Most experts agree that the decline in the age of puberty is attributable to decreased rates of disease, increased nutrition, and human females’ ability to adapt sexual maturation to environmental cues (e.g., health, food, shelter). This is why it is difficult to speak of a “normal” age and time for puberty. We are adaptive creatures and “normal” depends upon our personal and communal conditions. This also means that “normal” puberty development is not necessarily “good” or “healthy;” it’s simply an average marker of response to external circumstances that impact internal functions.

Steingraber argues that, particularly in the last several decades, these trends seem to be responding to stimuli beyond nutrition and general health. She highlights numerous studies linking exposure to environmental chemicals (particularly endocrine-disrupting chemicals, which can mimic hormones in the body) to health concerns such as shortened gestational periods in fetal development, low birth-weight babies, increased obesity, and poor insulin regulation.

This should make us sit up and take notice since, as Steingraber says, “children are exposed continuously to low-level endocrine disruptors in their diets, drinking water and air supply.” Chemical flame retardants (e.g., polybrominated biphenyls [PBBs]) have been linked to earlier menstruation and pubarche. Similarly, high levels of dioxin exposure have been associated with elevated risks for breast cancer and early menarche. Hormonally active components, which have been linked to earlier pubertal development, can be found in many products including hair tonics, pesticides, and building materials. Animal studies indicate that prenatal and early-life exposure to bisphenol A (originally developed as a synthetic hormone and now used in all polycarbonate plastics and food and beverage can lining) can induce earlier sexual maturity. Analysis of U.S. girls’ urine indicates the presence of hormonally active agents and traces of known human contaminants such as phthalates and bisphenol A.

The Big Trifecta

Our system is ruled by hormones {the endocrine system}. Truly the most important regulatory part of our health. The balancing act of testosterone, progesterone and estrogen are continually messaging back and forth to each other, regulating everything from mood, metabolism, libido and overall sexual function.

A balancing Act

Levels of progesterone and estrogen should be harmonious and like a symphony. The slightest movement can push our bodies down a path of chronic disease and poor health. Your mission is to really give some love to this critical system without the use of pharmaceuticals if possible. Estrogen is responsible for many things involving {growth} ~ hair, breasts and regulating our cycles. But estrogen can promote both positive and negative growth if that balance is out of whack and also depending on where that estrogen is coming from.  God gave us three types of estrogen. And really can we ever say he does not know what he is doing when it comes to our bodies?! We just stopped listening a long time ago. How is that working out for us?

Estrogen

  • E1 – estrone
  • E2 – estradiol
  • E3 – estriol
  • and many more!
  • the correct proportion is (15% E1, 15% E2 and 70% E3)

Progesterone Promotes Our Health

I read a long time ago this acronym and it really helped me understand why progesterone was good and needed especially to a precious baby in the womb.

PROmoting-GESTation = progesterone (critical to healthy pregnancies)

Estrogen Effect

(Read here for more specifics)

  • Causes endometrium to over grow
  • Increased body fat and weight gain
  • Retains water and salt
  • Depression, anxiety and headaches
  • Increases chance of cyclical migraines
  • Can increase gallbladder issues
  • Sleep cycle disrupted
  • Poor thyroid function
  • inconsistent blood sugar
  • Increased risk of blood clots
  • increase risk of breast cysts
  • Little or no libido
  • endometrial cancer risk factor
  • Increased risk of breast cancer
  • Bone density and loss
  • Reduces vascular tone
  • Triggers autoimmune diseases

Progesterone Effect

  • Protects against cyst growth
  • Helps break down fat for energy
  • Natural Diuretic
  • Natural anti-depressant, calms anxiety
  • Can help prevent migraines
  • promotes healthy deep sleep
  • Facilitates normal thyroid function
  • Helps normalize blood sugar levels
  • Can prevent clots by normalizing Vit. K
  • Libido enhancer
  • Restores cell oxygen levels
  • Prevents endometrial cancer
  • Prevents breast cancer cell growth
  • Stimulates new bone formation
  • Improves vascular tone
  • Prevents autoimmune disease

You can see what a delicate teetering scale this is. And really the issue is not when both decrease slightly, it is when the estrogen increases without progesterone there to protect the endocrine system. They are like sisters who have a love hate relationship. Both are needed to support each other in a positive way, but when the mean girl takes over (estrogen) it’s not a happy situation.

From age 35 to 50, there is a 75% reduction in production of progesterone in the body. Estrogen, during the same period, only declines about 35%. By menopause, the total amount of progesterone made is extremely low, while estrogen is still present in the body at about half its pre-menopausal level.

With the gradual drop in estrogen but severe drop in progesterone, there is insufficient progesterone to counteract the amount of estrogen in our body. Many women in their mid-thirties, most women during peri-menopause (mid-forties), and essentially all women during menopause (age 50 and beyond) are overloaded this is naturally induced estrogen dominance.

Dr. John Lee, the world’s authority on natural hormone therapy, explains the key to hormonal balance is the modulation of progesterone to estrogen ratio. For optimum health, the progesterone to estrogen ratio should be between 200 and 300 to 1.

Pre Menopausal Women

The two times during a womans life when the levels of progesterone are naturally low are puberty and the few years right before menopause (peri-menopause). Between these years estrogen can really take hold and begin its dominance. What are the common cases of estrogen dominance ? It can be attributed to birth control pills, environmental toxins and food.

YIKES Menopause!

This group of women are really victims to an almost “intentional” rise in estrogen based on common modern practices.

Ever heard of HRT {hormone replacement therapy}? Of course you have, but let’s really dig into the deception. Women still willingly take HRT without hesitation, even after mounting evidence exists to support that HRT significantly increases the risk of breast cancer.

Environmental Estrogen

Every single day we are subject to an onslaught of estrogen hormones. If we look at how our society has changed in just the last 50 + years we can point towards a massive decline in food, overuse of medications and overall low physical activity. Where is the balance that once existed?

Keep in mind { Synthetic estrogen is NOT bio-degradable and is fat soluble} Women taking HRT or birth control excrete it via the urine, where it finds a way back to our food supply.

We are plagued in America!

A good portion of estrogen come from cattle. They are fed estrogen-like hormones with great abundance as well as growth hormones. These are proven to stay in the meat and when humans eat it, the hormones are easily passed to our systems.

As much as 25 MILLION pounds a year of hormones and antibiotics

are given to cattleeach year in the U.S.

Think it is just cattle? Poultry is even more severely affected. Here are some interesting stats: in 1940 it took 4 months to grow a chicken to full size, now 6 weeks! We all have seen the disgusting conditions that chickens are kept in. Do we not think that those diseases and chemicals are not passed into us?

The amount of pesticides used every year is mind blowing, with hundreds more in the works. Even if you purchase organic, it is still suggested to wash and peel carefully due to exposure from other local farms and the air (full of aluminum and other toxic chemicals). We wash our food with a special essential oil blend that ensures we kill every last possible bacteria and eliminates chemicals that might be resting on top.

Xenoestrogen

Think back to when your baby was in the womb, each follicle that encloses the ovum is extremely sensitive to all outside exposures. There are nearly 800K follicles that are created in the embryo. Usually we are never aware of exposures as adults, because they may not be apparent immediately on the outside, however that sweet baby inside feels EVERYTHING and at a much higher rate. The estrogens that a mother is exposed to may damage those ovarian follicles, leaving them useless. Worse yet, the effects do not show up until that baby reached a pre-puberty or puberty age.

It takes about 20 seconds for exposure of these xenoestrogens to hit the bloodstream.

Where do we find xenoestrogens?

  • all those lovely beauty products
  • lotions
  • shampoo/conditioners/soaps
  • perfumes
  • hair sprays
  • presticides
  • herbicides
  • dry-cleaning chemicals
  • that pretty nail polish
  • the fumes inside a nail salon!

Please Ditch the Soy I BEG you!

Soy, the {alternative} that so many are duped into thinking is the {safer} alternative to dairy. Remember just 20 years ago and you were not cool if you did not do soy as a woman? It is all over our environment. I kind of want to just slap people in Starbucks when I hear the orders, and especially when it is for their developing child! If you want to choose a large source of xenoestrogens, then choose soy and better yet, go for that infant formula too, which is one of the largest culprits.

An infant drinking soy formula is the equivalent to 5 birth control pills a DAY. We must encourage parents to research and choose wisely and educate themselves before using soy based formula.

Other Sources of Imbalance

Coffee

The moment I stopped drinking loads of coffee I felt incredible. When we increase our coffee consumption there is a much higher rate of estrogen.

Studies have shown that women who consumed at least 500 milligrams of caffeine daily, the equivalent of four or five cups of coffee, had nearly 70% more estrogen during the early follicular phase than women who consume no more than 100 mg of caffeine daily, or less than one cup of coffee.

According to Mercola.com

Most people are not aware that regular coffee consumption can be a significant source of pesticides. According to the CS Monitor, conventional farmers apply up to 250 pounds of chemical fertilizers per acre!

Pesticides contribute to a wide range of health problems, including prostate and other types of cancers, Parkinson’s disease, and miscarriages in pregnant women.

Coffee also contains high amounts of metals that can create a toxic liver. Our bodies own frequency is also highly disrupted by coffee. It lowers our energy balance and leaves us more open to disease and poor health.

Stress

When we look at the endocrine system, which is responsible for regulating hormones, stress is a large contributing factor. Our bodies produce less progesterone when we experience adrenal fatigue. And adrenal fatigue is directly related to stress. Once there is an imbalance in the estrogen/progesterone we can experience major fatigue, migraines, blood sugar imbalances and poor sleep.

Other factors that contribute and much be monitored {or taken out completely} are deficiencies in vitamin B6 and magnesium. When you have too much estrogen in your body these are typically out of  balance.

Also too much sugar, bad fats, exposure to pesticides in food and processed fast food. Basically our whole western minded life is wreaking havoc on women and little girls {men and boys too}! All of these directly impact your long term health and chance of disease.

I am going to list some all-too-common issues that are at epidemic levels in today’s society. By no means is this even a complete list, but rather the ones I hear of most with my members and friends. Please consult your Doctor first with anything health related, but be sure to SPEAK up for natural options and do your research!

Premenstrual Syndrome or (PMS)

Did you know PMS can start as early as age 9 now is some girls battling estrogen dominance? It can last well into middle age and later if the proper balance is not achieved of estrogen/progesterone.

I love the work of Dr. Katherine Dalton who was one of the first to really research and understand the role of progesterone in the body. Read here for a full article/interview with her. PMS symptoms are really the greater issue of not enough progesterone in the body. Many women report that after dosing with high amounts of natural progesterone, their difficulties decrease significantly. She was asked can women take {too much} progesterone. Here was her answer:

No, I don’t think she can. A normal menstruating woman can’t have too much because she can’t get up to that “normal” level that she has in pregnancy. Women have a colossal amount; and there’s a limit to the amount, with our present methods of administration, that we can get into the blood. Vaginally, we can use it. We’ve found 400 mg was the limit, and if you use 500 to 600 mg, it won’t go any higher. You can only put it in every two hours because of the wax in the matrix. So we’re limited by menstruation, after everything else, and the same with progesterone injections, we’re limited by the vehicle. Oh, definitely. There’s no harm in overdosing. You can’t reach it. Very definitely overdose.

Now, what matters is where that progesterone is coming from. I only use one kind and please contact me to know what I use and trust. It works miracles, honestly. Life changing.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

This is a BIG one! I can honestly say the sad part is that 1 out of 2 women I meet are plagued by this easy to correct syndrome. What is PCOS? Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition where multiple cysts are found on the ovaries along with other symptoms like an ovulation (lack of ovulation), menstrual abnormalities, hirsutism (facial hair), male pattern baldness, acne, and often obesity. What is most shocking to me is that over 30% of modern day women now deal with this! Most women under the age of 30 are at higher risk and often have this without knowing it until they try to conceive. It truly is an epidemic among young girls, just as autism is an epidemic among young boys.

How does PCOS happen? Overproduction of the hormone androgen may be another contributing factor. Androgen is a male sex hormone that women’s bodies also produce. Women with PCOS often produce higher-than-normal levels of androgen. This can affect the development and release of eggs during ovulation. Excess insulin (a hormone that helps convert sugars and starches into energy) may cause high androgen levels. It all comes down to a {hormonal imbalance}. But what is western medicine’s answer?

More synthetics and drugs!! Makes zero sense. How about changing the diet to good healthy whole foods? Take out gluten and dairy and other factors that only ADD MORE estrogen to the body. Also a natural source of progesterone is crucial. Be sure to do your homework and ask the tough questions before taking certain pharmaceuticals. Doctors might mean well, but because of their lack in natural training, they assume the body is producing enough progesterone when it really is not.

PCOS rarely occurs when the body has enough progesterone. If we think {common sense} about this that the leading cause of estrogen dominance is a lack of progesterone then it only makes sense when we are looking at a condition like POCS. We know that within about 6 months or more of using a high quality natural progesterone, that many symptoms tend to decrease or diminish all together.

Fibrocystic Breast

This is something I have personal experience with and have seen a dramatic decrease with natural progesterone dosing. For most women, including me, these were directly related to stress, fatigue, coffee, and my hormonal imbalance. Using a natural progesterone has completely shifted my hormones for the better {also dropping coffee and only drinking occasionally}.

Each woman should routinely do a self examination, and make an appointment with their doctor to assess. Always keep in mind not every lump means cancer, but we also have to be on guard when it comes to exposure to radiation and testing such as mammograms. I have opted for thermography testing with my homeopathic doctor and feel this is a very effective, natural way to test my breasts for possible issues.

Other wonderful natural support remedies are Cod Liver oil and Evening Primrose.

Endometriosis

This is something that is very common and often women do not realize they are suffering from it. Endometriosis occurs when the lining of the uterus is found on the outside of the uterus. It can occur anywhere from the vagina, to the fallopian tubes, the abdomen and uterine muscles. Many women become infertile due to this condition. One of the most significant side effects occurs when the endometrium begins to grow between organs causing them to stick together.

American health statistics state that approximately ten to fifteen percent of women in their reproductive years from age 25 to 45 have endometriosis

The cells of the endometrium are extremely sensitive to estrogen and much research states that xenoestrogens and environmental estrogen play a huge role in the over growth of the endometrium.

Risk factors:

  • Possible family history from mother/sister
  • Late life pregnancy {after 30}
  • History of long menstrual cycles with a shorter than normal time between cycles
  • Abnormal uterine structure
  • Poor diet
  • Stress/anxiety/emotional unbalance

Women often complain of heavy bleeding, pain during intercourse, low back pain, fatigue or often a diagnosis of chronic fatigue/fibromyalgia can be mis-diagnosed when it really ties back to endometriosis. Of course we always want to consult our physicians, but keep in mind there really is no “good” form of western treatment. SO why not try something natural first and get to the root of the condition?

One thing proven is that endometriosis stems from estrogen dominance. So common sense dictates trying a natural progesterone as well as looking at your personal exposure to environmental and synthetic estrogen.

How can natural progesterone help?

  1. Inhibits Cell Growth {livestrong.com} ~ Progesterone directly inhibits the growth of endometrial cells. A review in the journal “Human Reproduction” purports that progestins stimulate atrophy or regression of endometrial lesions. Another review in “Human Reproduction Update” notes that a study that evaluated the efficacy of progestin treatment for endometriosis in several studies found progestins reduced or eliminated pain symptoms in approximately 90 percent of women. The effectiveness of progestins for treating endometriosis is not just linked to its growth inhibiting actions, but also to its induction of anovulation, inhibition of blood vessel growth and anti-inflammatory actions.
  2. Reduces Hormone Levels ~ Continuous administration of progesterone inhibits ovulation and lowers estrogen levels. It also lowers the secretion of other hormones that are critical for maintaining the menstrual cycle. In some women, pain associated with endometriosis is more pronounced during menstruation and progestin treatment attenuates this pain by preventing menstruation.
  3. Inhibits Vessel Growth ~ During each menstrual cycle, estrogen stimulates growth of the endometrium which is also accompanied by increased blood vessel growth to supply the tissue with oxygen and nutrients. Blood vessel growth also occurs in endometrial cysts, causing them to enlarge and become more painful. A study in a mouse model of endometriosis in the July 2009 issue of “MHR Basic Science of Reproductive Medicine” reports that progesterone inhibits blood vessel growth in endometrial tissue.
  4. Decreases Inflammation ~ The outgrowth of endometrial cysts elicits an inflammatory response, which contributes to the painfulness of the condition. The review in “Human Reproduction Update” reports that studies have also demonstrated that progestins reduce inflammation in women with endometriosis.

Breast Cancer

This is such a touchy topic and is best to do your own research. Find your own health values and stick to them. Just understand that pharmaceutical companies make huge profits. Enough said. And those seemingly good charities that are raising billions for research? Well, they are ties to those pharmaceutical companies as well.

I will say this. Breast cancer is on the rise in many forms and that wonderful thing called common sense dictates a link to environmental and synthetic estrogens like birth control. Today the number in the U.S. is 1 in 4. In the 1960’s it was 1 in 30!

If we are so darn advanced with western medical care then why are all of these conditions in the rise? Common sense people. Common sense.

The government approves drugs to {treat} cancer that {cause} cancer. Estrogen based drugs flat out increase your chance at cancer. Period. Many published studies show that taking synthetic estrogen and {synthetic} progesterone have a two to three fold risk in developing breast cancer.

Health care today is sick care. Imagine if everyone starting using the herbs, essential oils and other natural substances that actually cured disease not just manage it? Who would be out of money?

There is a clear risk from taking synthetic estrogen for over 10 years whether it be from HRT or Birth control. How many young girls are on birth control because parents feel it is the only way to manage symptoms? Not only is the chance of cancer increased later in life, but those {symptoms} are directly related to environmental estrogen and easily managed by natural progesterone.

How does Natural Progesterone Help Breast Cancer?

Cancer cells have been found to decrease when hormone levels are properly balanced. Remember, progesterone is our friend and protective against cancer. As always, seek a Doctors advice {bc I have to say that}

What steps can you take?

  1. Natural Progesterone! Do your research but choose wisely and look for the source that you are comfortable with. There is one in particular that I love and trust, please feel free to contact me for more info.
  2. Eat whole foods. Unprocessed, organic and try to ditch the soy, gluten and dairy.
  3. Avoid Coffee and tea, and when drinking limit to one cup a day or less and always drink organic.
  4. Cleanse the liver. The liver is the most important organ to a healthy immune system and our bodies functioning at the highest levels. Anything synthetic you may have taken in life is stored in the liver. Until it is cleansed out, there is only so much progress you will make. Estrogen is metabolized in the liver and stored, and many pesticides and chemicals act like estrogen. We use a few things to help with a proper detox. One is essential oils and the other is a product called Miracle Phlush. Please feel free to contact me for further questions.

As always consult your doctor first. This is by no means a replacement for advice from your own practitioner. I do encourage you to be careful. Come armed with research and questions and do not be afraid to try something natural first.

Always remember that you are in control of your health. You make the decisions. Empowerment!
